Blocked drains are unpleasant and tend to get worse. If a sink, toilet or outside drain isn’t clearing, tell us and we’ll connect you with a local plumber in Tralee who can clear it and find out why.
Where blockages happen
- Kitchen sinks, mostly from fat and food waste
- Showers and basins, mostly from hair and soap
- Toilets that won’t flush or keep backing up
- Outside gullies, yard drains and downpipes
- Shared drains that serve more than one house
Common causes
- Cooking fat and oil poured down the sink
- Wipes, nappies and sanitary products flushed down the toilet
- Leaves and silt in outside gullies
- Roots, collapsed pipes or poor falls in older drains
Mains drains and private systems
Most of Tralee town is on mains drainage, but many homes in the surrounding countryside use a septic tank or treatment system. If you’re not sure whether a blockage is in your own pipes, a shared drain or the public sewer, say so when you get in touch. Responsibility for public sewers lies with Uisce Éireann, not the homeowner. Tank emptying is normally done by a separate licensed contractor.
Keeping drains clear
- Put fat in the bin, not down the sink
- Use a strainer in sinks and showers
- Only flush toilet paper
- Sweep leaves away from gullies in autumn
